BMW is rushing to scale up production of its new BMW i3 electric sedan after demand came in far stronger than expected — the automaker opened orders months early, and it's now fast-tracking output at its Munich plant. For US buyers, the i3 is shaping up as one of the most compelling range-and-charging packages of the 2027 model year: roughly 440 miles of EPA range, up to 400 kW fast charging, and a built-in NACS port.

The 2027 BMW i3, by the Numbers

The i3 is BMW's second Neue Klasse model, following the iX3 that entered production at the company's new Debrecen, Hungary, plant late last year. It rides on BMW's sixth-generation eDrive system with a 108.7 kWh battery, good for up to 566 miles on the European WLTP cycle and about 440 miles by the EPA's estimate in the US.

Inside, the Neue Klasse cabin centers on a 43-inch Panoramic Vision display that runs across the base of the windshield, with a 17.9-inch floating central touchscreen handling infotainment. The model bound for America is the i3 50 xDrive, which BMW expects to price somewhere in the $50,000-to-$55,000 range — notably under the $61,500 starting price of the iX3 50 xDrive. US pricing isn't official yet, but the i3 goes on sale here early in 2027.

400 kW Charging and a Built-In NACS Port

Range is only half the story. The i3 uses an 800-volt architecture that supports DC fast charging at up to 400 kW, which BMW says can add nearly 250 miles of range in about 10 minutes. That puts it in the same league as the fastest-charging EVs on the market — the kind of performance China's fast-charging arms race has been normalizing across the industry.

Just as important for US drivers: the i3 ships with a NACS port built in, matching the approach we've seen from Mitsubishi on the Eclipse Sportback and the 2028 Mercedes GLA EV. That means access to Tesla Superchargers without an adapter, plus the wider NACS fast-charging network — no dongle required.

What the Ramp-Up Says About EV Demand

The production news matters beyond the spec sheet. BMW opened orders for the i3 in mid-June — months ahead of schedule — because of stronger-than-expected demand. "The new i3 is already seeing strong demand since orders opened ahead of its launch," sales boss Jochen Goller said. The iX3 tells a similar story: BMW just built its 50,000th iX3 nine months after series production started, the fastest ramp-up at a new BMW plant in company history, with orders on track to hit 100,000.

That's a meaningful signal for anyone watching the EV market. While some automakers are pulling back on electric plans, BMW's Neue Klasse lineup is selling faster than the company can build it — and BMW is responding by accelerating production of both models. It's the kind of demand that affordable EVs like the Hyundai IONIQ 3 have also been generating in 2026.
